Purpose

A learnership is a workbased learning programme. This means that classroom studies at a college or training centre are combined with practical onthejob experience. We learn much better when we can practice what we have been taught in the classroom in a workplace environment.

This Learnership covers all trades in the construction industry and is made up of generic task needed for all trades, but then branches out into several areas of specialisation. Which are

  • Masonry
  • Carpentry
  • Painting
  • Tiling
  • Plastering

When applying for this qualification, you would choose your area of specialisation before starting. Once you have selected the area of specialisation, you would then complete the learnership over the 12month period and learners will be exposed to

  • Plan construction activities using mathematical principles.
  • Communicate with relevant persons
  • Plan construction activity.
  • Establish work area.
  • Execute construction activity (your area of specialisation).

Course Overview

The learners will attend their knowledge and practical training at our centres which are situated in Cape Town, Kya Sands (Johannesburg) and Ggeberha (Port Elizabeth). The course covers 14 weeks at the institution which is made up of Fundamental unit standards covering numeracy and literacy, as well as core and elective unit standards that are selected to meet the minimum credits required to achieve the qualification. Learners will complete formative assessments which will be recorded in their POE’s

Learners are then required to complete exposure at the worksite gaining valuable onthejob experience against the unit standards completed for roughly between 6 8 months of the year.

On completion thereof, learners will be required to complete summative assessments against the assessment criteria as listed in each unit standard. Successful learners will receive a National Certificate issued by the relevant SETA’s and the credits will be registered on the National Learner Registration Database.

As there is only 1 level to this qualification (level 3), learners can only successful completion with at least 1218 months proven onthejob (workplace) experience, apply for a trade test.

Recommended Entry Criteria

  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.
  • Or a Grade 10 with Maths and Science
